Tablets have also become another super-fast-growing mobile device. Of course, the spark was Apple’s iPad in 2010. A year later, the market saw 63 million shipments, and the prediction is for 139 million by 2015, according to International Data Corporation (IDC).

With so much attention focused on mobile devices, the biggest moneymaking opportunity is likely to be advertising. The medium has some important advantages. First, it is possible to get more data on a person, such as in terms of location. For example, it is now possible to target advertising for a certain restaurant or store to users when they are nearby.

It is also easier to personalize a mobile experience. After all, people keep their phones with them throughout the day. What’s more, by downloading apps, a company can be a part of that person’s life. It is a powerful brand presence and can lead to ongoing usage and customer loyalty.

But over time, the smartphone will become a part of the purchase decision. That is, it will become common to use it as a way to make payments or use rewards.

Another monetization opportunity is in-app purchases. This is when a user makes a purchase while using an app (which was likely downloaded for free). A frequent use is games, such as by Zynga. But there are likely to be many other applications. According to Gartner, the market for in-app revenues is expected to go from $4 billion in 2010 to $52.3 billion in 2015.
